Dear Young Leader,
The popular mantra, "Fail fast, fail often" may sound inspiring, but can be misleading. ¶Failure isn’t always rosy but the lessons we draw from it and the changes we make always make all the difference.¶ If you burn a meal for instance, while learning to cook, the value doesn’t lie in the act of burning food, it lies in figuring out what went wrong, adjusting the recipe, and trying again. Without that reflection and effort, failure is just a mistake, not progress.
As we step into the coming weeks of 2024, I’m especially excited.💃🤗 The Christmas holiday season always brings beautiful memories with glad tidings, and this year is no different. Plus, I hear Santa have a gift 🎁 for the first ten subscribers to comment on this week's publication.
Today's Article Spotlight 👏 👏 👏
Today, everybody understands the power of storytelling; due to its positive impact, even business owners have adopted the strategy to sell their products and promote certain narratives that keep them ahead of their competitors. However, when we share success stories, are we caught up in a failure fad? Or of what importance is it to our growth?
Failure fad occurs when we romanticize failure as a launch pad to success. While it is a valid opinion, it is a dangerous one to hold because you will be designed to expect failure in every project. Imagine that you have spent so much time on planning the success of a project, and somehow, you are tricked to believe that something may go wrong along the line or you're on the wrong path, it's a mind game🤔
Failure Fad can be a motivational arsenal, but it could also be a time bomb. While it encourages resilience and determination, failure should not be cultivated as a necessity; rather be kept in view and plan for the worst case scenarios.
¶You know the popular saying, Plan for peace, prepare for war? The goal is to achieve peace, but if it turns out that there is war in between, we will be ready.¶ Likewise, be more focused on the results so much that when failure occurs, you will be motivated to pull through and overcome it. Also, in as much as you don't want to give room for failure, when setback happens - do not allow yourself to be sad for so long, plan your next move from the lessons learnt.
🎯Factors Contributing to a Failure Fad
Social media: For those who care to listen, social media is not a real place. Almost everyone seems to be winning there. Showcasing overnight successes and spectacular failures without insight on what truly happened. Do not be carried away. Work with your plan; there's a reason you designed it.
Startup Culture: Every day, we are reminded that an entrepreneur is one who takes risks. Why make new mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes of others? There is no need to be trapped in your own risk-filled journey towards entrepreneurship when you can easily follow the steps of those ahead of you.
Self-help Industry: You might have read many books and attended seminars that highlighted overcoming adversity, so much that it feels like your reality. Connect with real people and get real help.
Embracing and pushing through failures can foster growth and encourage entrepreneurship, but it can also perpetuate anxiety. The thing is, nobody actually starts an endeavour looking forward to failing and there is no award for the most failed businesses, (only the most successful). Hence, it is important to balance the narrative. Recognize the worth of failure, but don’t glorify it to the point where success feels like an afterthought. Failure may be overwhelming, but its true value lies in how we turn lemons into lemonade.
