Dear Young Leader,
Think about the moments that really made you very emotional; a shared laughter with a friend, the comfort of a hug from a loved one or the way a crowd’s energy lifted your spirit. These aren’t just good feelings - they are limbic resonance in action. The amazing part is, limbic systems are designed in such a way, that it allows us to tune into each other, increasing our joy, relieving our pain and strengthening our bonds. It’s the reason why we thrive in connection and wither in isolation.
Welcome To A New Week 💐💐
How's your today been, though? I hope it's been productive.🤗 As for me, I won't even lie, Life has been lifeing.🥲 I have been on a mental health recess but i’m back and thriving so what the heck did I miss?🤗
Today's Article Spotlight 👏 👏 😇
We all have that uncle, teacher, or friend who we naturally gravitate towards every time they make an appearance. This is not because the rest of the world doesn’t care about us, but that there is this extra “feel good” experience that comes with interacting with them. Maybe because overtime, they have shown to be more thoughtful about our well-being in a way that nobody else does, which makes us naturally drawn to them than other people in our lives.
This is what limbic resonance is all about - the unexplainable connection that occurs between people, especially in close relationships. It is the mechanism that allows for deep emotional connection, empathy and shared experiences.
The limbic system is the emotional center of the brain, responsible for processing feelings, forming memories, and regulating key aspects of our social behavior. When there is a bond between leaders and their followers, there seems to be less conflict in the team due to the shared connection. Most leaders like to toughen up in front of their followers, which gives the impression that they are “strong and perfect.”
However, when a leader is able to come down from their high horse and connect with their followers, it shows in the output and productivity level of the team. It is true that leading a cross-functional team can be overwhelming, but being able to relate with the team's shared experiences makes all the difference. This is the code your best uncle, teacher, or friend was able to crack that created the deep connection you both enjoy. They don’t just come to class to teach; they know a little about you, they spend time chatting with you, and they even compliment you openly. It all begins from there.
Conversely, it’s not always positive. When negative emotions like anger or anxiety dominate a relationship, they can also ripple through the limbic system, creating a toxic emotional loop. This underscores the importance of emotional regulation in maintaining healthy connections. It is not always easy to develop a deep connection with team members, especially when the morale is at an all-time low, but these connections might be the game changer to boost productivity in the team.
Here Are A Few Tips That Might Help:
Active Listening: Listen to what your team members have to say and take note of their suggestions. Ask probing questions that make them share deeper insights into their thoughts. When team members feel heard, they tend to be more dedicated to the growth of the team.
Nonverbal Communication: Research has shown that 70-93% of communications are nonverbal. According to Albert Mehrabian, a body language researcher, 55% of communication is nonverbal, 38% is vocal, and only 7% is verbal. In other words, your eye contact, facial expressions, and gestures are more important than the actual words you say. Put thoughts in your expressions.
Empathy: Be sure to understand where your team members are coming from. Remember you were once a team member in another team. Show genuine concern where necessary.
Shared Experiences: Having retreats or hangouts that allow for team bonding beyond the office environment spurs productivity.
Limbic resonance requires mindfulness and careful evaluation of patterns. If not done carefully, the wrong emotions (stress and anger) might be triggered. As leaders, it is important to wear a human outlook, knowing that cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds will always interplay in our individual preferences. Limbic resonance is the jigsaw that cuts through individual biases and allows for a more rewarding working relationship.
