Dear Young Leader,
Self-expression offers a path towards personal liberation and self-awareness. When we express ourselves honestly, whether through chit-chats, art, music, writing, or simply speaking our minds, we tap into the essence of who we are. It is an act of vulnerability, as we reveal our authentic selves to others, without filters or masks. One of the most significant benefits of self-expression is its cathartic nature. Through the various creative outlets, we can channel our emotions, both positive and negative, into something tangible by way of having realtime conversations, painting, dancing, singing or even writing in a journal can serve as therapeutic tools to ¶release pent-up feelings and foster connections with others.¶
A tantalizing welcome to this week's edition of another fascinating Publication from the stables of Dear Young Leader Media House.😇🤗 How are you doing really? Have you ever had a moment when you were caught in-between heightened emotions but chose to remain quiet, probably because you didn't want to unleash some temper tantrums? True or true? Nontheless, Emotional intelligence is key when expressing ourselves and relating with others. ¶It is important to know the right timing, the choice of tone, and the words to use when expressing how we feel.¶
Moving forward, today's Spotlight is on ¶SELF EXPRESSION¶
When you think of self expression as a daily routine, you might not notice how important a concept it is. Both introvert and extrovert, suffer the problem of self expression albeit differently. While introverts might refuse to state their exact feelings, extroverts might go ahead to overstate their feelings. Which ever side of the divide you find yourself, there is a huge call for concern as to how you express yourself.
As an introvert, your teammates may not know they hurt you if you don't express it to tell them. They may assume all is well and leave you hurting. Expressing yourself doesn't have to be as awkward as you imagine it to be. If you don't let people know about how you feel about a thing, or your relationship with them, they will keep assuming and hurting you in unimaginable ways.
As an Extrovert, it is true that we live in an extroverted society, but imagine a world full of opinions. At what point do you pause to listen to the next person? How will you know you're wrong when the world is filled with your hot takes? The way you express yourself can either be a problem or a solution.
¶Primarily, in any form of communication, knowing your audience is the first step towards communicating effectively.¶
Who are you talking to?
Your boss is not your friend even if they are extremely friendly in the work space. In expressing yourself to them, keep the Language official. You can loosing up a little if you're expressing yourself to a close friend or family member. They will understand but your boss won't.
Why do you need to Express Yourself?
Consider these; How important is the thing you want to say? Will it help you foster a better working relationship with your colleagues? In the case of your boss, how does it help the organization? In the case of a friend or family, how does that opinion foster better relationship? ¶Basically, you need to figure out how the potential outcome of a particular expression, before going ahead with it.¶
Is this the right time?
Everything goes with timing. When you miss the right time to get a task done, it becomes a problem. You can't meet people to talk about an issue that's likely to cause bad blood when you met them visibly angry. Things might blow out of proportion. Watch your timing and be sure it's perfect.
Above all, you don't need to feel bad about having an opinion, but you need to be sure your opinion is not hurting another person. Speak up when you have to. ¶Nobody can perfectly interprete your feelings, if you don't voice them out.¶ Apply emotional intelligence in your self expression and when you do, you will see that people will not just respect your opinion but will genuinely seek them. Whenever you express yourself and notice that the receivers of that expression are unusually on the defensive, it's probably because of your tone or any of the things listed above, were not observed.
PS: Let us know what difficulties you have experienced in the cause of Self Expression and we will be happy to provide more insight.
