Dear Young Leader,🧑🎤
Surely, we definitely want to always feel good about ourselves and there is also that natural tendency to want to avoid or deny anything that challenges our good self-image. True or true?🤗 Now here is the kicker, ignoring our shadow self doesn’t just erase it; yahh,🥴 it only strengthens its hold on us. By facing our shadow, (the traits, emotions and past experiences that we sometimes repress or deny) we gain insight and clarity into the "why"; behind our behaviors, reactions and recurring life patterns.
Welcome To A New Week 🎉🎉
As we step into a brand new week, let's remind ourselves of the power we hold as individuals committed to driving change. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “It always seems impossible until it's done.” This week, let's carry that belief forward, knowing that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the bigger picture of progress and transformation.
Today's Article Spotlight 💥💥
Guess who’s always physically there with you, no matter where you go? Your shadow.🤗 But even that loyalty has limits - just step into a dark room and it will disappear, leaving you all alone. Sad🥲 right? Don't sweat it, you will definitely be fine.😌 Now, let's move onto the spotlight of the day - Shadow Work.
The term "Shadow Work" may or may not seem familiar, it almost even sounds like being a shadow of yourself. And in a way, it is. ¶Shadow work is a form of self-reflection and healing that helps you confront and integrate the “shadow” parts of yourself - the traits, emotions, and past experiences that you've repressed or denied.¶ This concept was first introduced by Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist, who believed that everyone has a “shadow self” - parts of our personality that we might hide from ourselves and others, often because we’ve been taught that they’re undesirable.
Hence, your actual shadows are those hidden personalities you possess. Hidden because society has made them appear inadequate, so you live the rest of your life in self-denial.🥴 You may have developed those shadows as a result of fear of the unknown, peer pressure, family values, or the need for validation. The truth is, you have only one life to live and it will be better to live it without chasing shadows.🌚
How to Start Your Shadow Work Journey🏄
Starting shadow work doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few ways to begin exploring your shadow self in a safe, constructive way:🎯
Journaling Your Triggers
Think about moments when you've felt a strong emotional reaction -like anger, jealousy, or resentment. Ask yourself: What about this situation made me feel this way? Writing down your thoughts can reveal underlying patterns and beliefs.
Practicing Self-Compassion
Shadow work can stir up emotions that are difficult to face. Remember, this journey isn't about judging yourself or feeling ashamed. Practice self-compassion, and remind yourself that everyone has a shadow side. It’s natural, and it's part of being human.
Reflecting on Projections
Projection is when we attribute our own feelings, desires, or insecurities onto others. For instance, if you find yourself judging someone for being overly confident, consider whether that judgment reflects something within you. Often, the traits we dislike in others are mirrors of our own unacknowledged parts.
Working with a Therapist
If diving into your shadow feels overwhelming, consider working with a therapist. They can guide you through these discoveries and help you process emotions that come up in a safe, supportive environment.
Embracing Your Wholeness🍄
Shadow work is not about "fixing" yourself; it’s about understanding and embracing all the facets of who you are. The shadow side contains valuable lessons, strengths, and hidden potential that can only emerge when we face and accept it. By embracing your shadow, you become more authentic, empathetic, and grounded. As you continue on this path, you’ll start to notice how much lighter and empowered you feel. Your relationships might deepen, and you’ll likely find greater satisfaction in life because you’re no longer bound by hidden fears or unprocessed emotions.
In closing, it doesn't help that the society we live in has a lot of stereotypes and almost nobody cares. This is why it is important that you guide your thoughts and reflect as much as you can; this will help you notice every pattern of your life, heal every emotional wound, develop empathy, and become a better version of yourself. Remember, you have to first accept that this is who you are before you can make any significant change.
