Dear Young Leader,
Every value-driven leader adopts certain strategies and leadership styles that make for an impactful leadership journey. ∆Yet, there are situations that place a demand on them to look away from the norm and think outside the box for better outcomes and solutions.∆ This inherently requires a shift in thinking and a bold step in trying out other feasible alternatives to tackle the issue at hand. Situational leadership is a way of leading, that changes based on what the team needs at the moment. Instead of using just one style of leadership, situational leaders adapt new ways to solve problems to fit the situation.
Welcome To A New Week 🤗👏
Talk to me, how are you REALLY doing? The year seems to be moving really fast🪂 and it’s okay to be tired.🥲 Just remember to take a break and recharge. Today's Article Spotlight 👏👏
As an emerging leader, there is a tendency to prove a point or show that you are worthy of the term “Exceptional Leader.” You try to prove this by putting in extra effort, working longer hours, striving to produce results, manage teams better, and tackle challenges. ∆There may be times when you even feel stuck and need to tweak your leadership style to tackle new challenges or connect with your team members better.∆ Rest assured that situational leadership is your best bet for scaling your way up.
∆Situational Leadership is one very flexible style of leadership that can seamlessly help you adapt to the unique needs of your team and situation.∆ It's based on the idea that there's no single "best" leadership style, but rather a range of styles that can be applied depending on the circumstances.
The Situational Leadership Model was developed by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, and it's built around these two core concepts: 👇
[Leadership Style and Development Level]
Leadership Style:
There are four main leadership styles:
Directing: This style is best for new team members or situations that require close guidance.
Coaching: This style is ideal for team members who need guidance and support.
Supporting: This style is best for team members who are self-motivated and need minimal guidance.
Delegating: This style is ideal for team members who are experienced and can work independently.
Development Level:
There are four development levels namely:
D1: New team members who need close guidance.
D2: Team members who need guidance and support.
D3: Team members who are self-motivated but need occasional guidance.
D4: Experienced team members who can work independently.
So, here are some tips how you can apply Situational Leadership in real-life situations:
Assess the situation: Take stock of the task, team member, and circumstances.
Choose your leadership style: Select the style that best fits the situation and team member's development level.
Adapt and adjust: Be willing to adjust your leadership style as the situation changes.
Communicate effectively: Clearly communicate your expectations and leadership style to your team member.
By adapting your leadership style to the unique needs of your team and situation, you can achieve better results, improve team satisfaction, and develop your team members' skills. Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership – be flexible, and you'll see the difference.
