Dear Young Leader,
Rather than solely focusing on external markers of success or pleasure to spark happiness which is often shortlived. it is however, imperative to pursue eudaimonic happiness, a form of happiness that comes from living a life of purpose and reaching your highest potential. One brilliant way to achieve eudaimonic happiness is to engage in activities that promote personal growth and development, such as pursuing a career, engaging in creative pursuits, volunteering to help others, cultivating positive relationships, practicing mindfulness and gratitude, and engaging in activities that promote physical and emotional well-being.
While you are ruminating on those thoughts, a refreshing welcome to this week's edition of Dear Young Leader Email Newsletter. 🤗💃 It's the dawn of a new week. Truth is, you may not always get the motivation, validation, and push from others - now, scratch that! You've got to always give yourself the highest of validation ratings and work from there. Be your No. 1 cheerleader. Hold your head up, chin up and be fabulous no matter what!.
Nonetheless, today's spotlight is on the pursuit of Eudaimonic Happiness. Have you ever wondered what lasting happiness looks like? Have you ever wished to achieve authentic well-being?Each of us - no matter the race, culture, or socio-economic background we were born and raised in – want a happy and joyful life. The only thing that differs is the means through which we achieve it. While some focus on momentary pleasures, others choose to pursue long-term goals. And this is where the difference between hedonic and eudaimonic happiness is most conspicuous.
But what is eudaimonic happiness, you might ask. For those of you who haven’t heard about eudaimonia, this concept has been around for nearly 2000 years. From an etymological standpoint, Eudaimonic is an adjective of the Noun(Eudaimonia). It is a Greek word containing E“eu” (“good”) and “daimōn” (“spirit”). This words roughly translates to happiness or, as some recent experts argue, flourishing or prosperity. Eudaimonic happiness and well-being represent the greatest form of human goodness; an ideal which both Aristotelian and Stoic philosophers promote as the foundation of a genuinely beautiful and harmonious life.
In a way, eudaimonic happiness is the opposite of hedonic happiness in the sense that it encourages us to give up momentary pleasures in favor of long-term goals and lasting happiness. Well! You may want to ask if we Can experience authentic fulfillment without knowing why we live; without having a clear direction; without a sense of purpose? Is it possible to feel happy without making significant changes and investing in our personal growth? Truly, we can’t. And many current theories on happiness fail to consider crucial concepts like growth, self-fulfillment, and purpose. This is where eudaimonic happiness comes into play, offering a completely different perspective on what it means to have a good life. By discovering our purpose and investing in personal growth, we can achieve fulfillment and live the life we’ve always wanted to have.
The Concept of Eudaimonic Happiness is comprised of six crucial elements/pillars that are prerequisite for authentic and lasting happiness:
Environmental mastery: This is the capacity to adapt and manage your surrounding environment and make the best out of it.
Self-acceptance: is synonymous to Self-discovery and includes identifying both your strengths and weaknesses. An unexamined life is not worth living says Socrates. As young leaders, it's important that we consistently and intentionally carry-out a self evaluation of our activities and lives generally. This will help us checkmate and monitor our personal growth and progress over time. Proper knowledge and understanding of oneself helps you to concentrate your energies on areas of your strengths which would ultimately bring out the best version of yourself while at the same time put your weakness under control and constant improvement where necessary.
Autonomy: The easiest way to flourish and achieve long-lasting happiness as young people in our complex society is to identify an existing problem and provide solution based on what you're passionate and interested in. Young people like you are doing amazing things in all spheres of life; and they're equally gaining competence, influence and exercising authority around their niche's areas. You too can if you take action.
Relationship/ Network: No one can fulfill his or her purpose in isolation. Man by his nature is powerless to do everything by himself. We were created not to be independent but interdependent. Eudaimonic happiness can therefore be achieved based on the quality of relationships or networks you've developed along life's journey. Networking itself is a social capital that young people should always take advantage by investing in good friendships and relationships. The road to the top can be lonely and miserable without someone to help, or one to run to in times of need.
Personal Growth: The room for personal growth and improvement can never be filled no matter what you think you've achieved. As Young people, you must always know that knowledge gives power, worth and value. Experience has shown that people enjoy optimum happiness and well-being when they know and understand the amount of power, worth and value they're attached to. Seek for ways to acquire and develop skills. Digital and technological skills are driving the world today, learn how best to use them to advance your career, business and expertise.
Purpose in Life: Life has a purpose and meaning. While some people may find it fashionable to live aimlessly and carelessly, it is advisable that as young people that want to achieve greatness and live a future happy life, you should always be mindful of your daily decisions and actions because that would ultimately affect your habit and long term goals either positively or negatively.
In conclusion, a life of eudaimonia is a striving life. It's a life of pushing yourself to your limits, and finding success. A eudaimonistic life will be full of the happiness that comes from achieving something really difficult, rather than just having it handed to you.
